Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam graduated from the Madras Institute of Technology with a degree in aeronautical engineering and entered the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) in 1958. He then soon moved to the Indian Space Research Organization, where he was the SLV-III project manager, India’s first satellite launch vehicle to be designed and produced. Rejoining DRDO in 1982, Kalam developed a program that produced several successful missiles that helped gain him the nickname “Missile Man.” From 1992 to 1997, Kalam served as Scientific Advisor to the Minister of Defense, and later as Senior Scientific Advisor (1999–2001) to the cabinet minister ranked government.

Kalam was known as a national hero by his prominent role in the country’s nuclear weapons tests in 1998, although the tests caused great concern among the international community. In 1998 Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam put forward a countrywide plan called “Technology Vision 2020”, which he identified in 20 years as a road map to turn India from a less developed society into a developed one. Among other steps, the plan called for rising agricultural productivity, emphasising technology as a tool for economic growth, and improving access to health care and education.

India’s ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) put Kalam forward in 2002 to replace Kocheril Raman Narayanan, the outgoing President. In spite of being Muslim, Kalam was nominated by the Hindu nationalist (Hindutva) NDA, and his popularity and popular appeal were such that even the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, supported his candidacy as well. Kalam won the election easily and in July 2002 was sworn in as the 11th president of India, a mostly ceremonial post. He remained committed to using technology and science to turn India into an advanced country. Kalam left office in 2007 and was replaced by the first woman president of the country, Pratibha Patil.
